When I was a child I used to wish I was American, so I could get a shot on the yellow school buses like in the movies.
I love the movie New York Minute, Roxy Ryan (Mary-Kate Olsen) gets chased around New York by the truancy officer Max Lomax (Eugene Levy) in New York City. Truancy officers are unheard of in the UK, so never did I imagine myself getting stopped in New York by a truancy officer. Let me tell you, the truancy officers do exists in New York!
I visited to New York for the first time when I was 24, on my own. I went to McDonald's for breakfast, as it's a place I feel comfortable sitting on my own. I got my breakfast and went over to get a straw. I turned round and a man asked how old I was and said shouldn't I be at school. I said I was 24. He showed me his truancy officer ID and walked away.
What if I just said I was 24 and I really was school age ? I assume he heard my Scottish accent and realised I was a tourist.
